Labour Day
Labour Day celebrations were initiated in the 1880’s to commemorate the critical struggle of the working-class individuals all over the world. Labour Day celebration is also known as International Workers Day, May Day, or Worker’s Day. This special day is marked in the first of May each year.
Labour day’s main celebration is held in Nairobi at the Historical Uhuru Park by the President as the guest of honour. In His absence, Labour CS is invited and in his absence the Secretary General of COTU presides over the event. All government workers are exempted from reporting to work on that day. Private employees are entitled to overtime allowances if they report to work. Many employers look forward to Labour Day in Kenya as they await the official address which approves increases of the minimum wage in the country.
